Risk Factors, Prevention and Early Detection
There are many known risk factors linked to breast cancer. Some of these factors affect risk a great deal and others by only a small amount. And some risk factors you can’t change. For instance, just being a woman and getting older increase your chances of getting breast cancer. However, there are things you can do to reduce your risk of breast cancer.

About 1.3 million new cases of breast cancer were expected to occur among women worldwide in 2007 (most recent data available) [2]. Rates of breast cancer around the world vary a great deal. In general, developed countries have higher rates than developing countries.  Lifestyle and reproductive factors are thought to play a large role. Low screening rates and incomplete reporting can make rates of breast cancer in developing countries look lower than they truly are and may also explain some of the difference.

About The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
The mission of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health. A minimum of 85 cents of every dollar goes to research and awareness programs.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation was established by Evelyn H. Lauder in 1993, with the intention of bringing about a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. Larry Norton, MD, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, has directed the Foundation's scientific activities since its beginnings. In 2002, BCRF expanded its mission to include prevention as well as cure, reflecting the direction of its research grants aimed at prevention as well as treatment. Since inception, BCRF has increased its annual funding level more than 200 times over, with grants of $34.5 million awarded to 166 scientists based in 10 countries (and with projects extending to 28 countries) in October 2008--a very long way from the $159,000 to eight researchers awarded in 1994.
